Using a kit of 4 building types, I investigated the possibility of developing the alley as one overall solid.

Backfill
The residential alley is a built landscape that expresses the culture of its users. Originally, this alley was a service between backyards, but it has evolved throughout history to become a landscape overpowered by the automobile. The initial neighborhood building stock was created to house single, nuclear families, but today the definition of family is becoming more and more diverse. Currently, we are in the midst of a cultural shift towards diverse social structures and salvation of precious land and resources. This includes less reliance on the automobile, a sense of community, and the sharing of amenities and resources.
Since the built environment is a reflection of cultural beliefs, the alley should evolve to meet this change. This project addresses this issue by introducing a new way to inhabit the alley by inserting a multi-use program and developing a hierarchy of shared spaces while respecting the existing fabric.
